Homemade Eggnog

Love eggnog for Christmas but hate the high cost? Make your own!

You need two things to make this recipe: a heavy saucepan and patience.

Mix 12 eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar, ad 1/2 teaspoon salt in a heavy saucepan. Use a whisk to make sure the mixture is blended well.

Gradually add 4 cups of whole milk. Heat on low heat. Keep checking the temperature. It needs to reach 160 degrees (F). This will take a while (about 30 minutes). You need to stir it often as it heats up. Once it reaches 160, stir constantly, and don’t let it boil! Cook at 160 for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, remove from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon nutmeg and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Add 4 more cups of whole milk.

Let the eggnog cool slightly then refrigerate overnight before serving.

If you’d like, you can add brandy, dark rum, or bourbon to the eggnog before you serve it. You can also top it with whipped cream and a sprinkle of additional nutmeg.

I usually rinse a milk jug to use when I refrigerate my eggnog.
